Emergent phenomena at oxide interfaces.
Recent technical advances in the atomic-scale synthesis of oxide heterostructures have provided a fertile new ground for creating novel states at their interfaces. Different symmetry constraints can be used to design structures exhibiting phenomena not found in the bulk constituents. A characteristic feature is the reconstruction of the charge, spin and orbital states at interfaces on the nanom...
متن کاملAtomic-scale compensation phenomena at polar interfaces.
The interfacial screening charge that arises to compensate electric fields of dielectric or ferroelectric thin films is now recognized as the most important factor in determining the capacitance or polarization of ultrathin ferroelectrics. Here we investigate using aberration-corrected electron microscopy and density-functional theory to show how interfaces cope with the need to terminate ferro...
متن کاملAdsorption phenomena at organic-inorganic interfaces
The qualitative solventand temperature-dependent conformational behavior of a peptide in the proximity of solid substrates with different adsorption properties is investigated by means of a simple lattice model. The resulting pseudophase diagrams exhibit a complex structure, which can be understood by analysing the minima of the free-energy landscape in dependence of appropriate system parameters.
متن کاملOctadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS)-coated ionic liquid drops: Micro-reactors for homogenous catalytic reactions at designated interfaces
An ionic liquid (IL), 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([Bmim]Cl) can assemble on prefabricated carboxylic acid-terminated chemical patterns on octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) film. The chemical pattern controls the position, shape and size of the IL on the surface. After the IL assembly - by incubating IL drops assembled on sample surface in an OTS silane vapor - an OTS layer was coated on ...
متن کاملCritical Phenomena at Interfaces Phase Transitions at Quantum Surfaces
Tlre qnantum systems helium and hydrogen provide a versatile testing ground for studying interfacial phenomena. As examples, both some properties of surface< near thermodynamic equilibrium, like layering and wetting, and uonequilibrium states of qucnch-condensed disordered films are discussed. A further topic is the development of macroscopic instabilities of interfaces under external perturbat...
